Shopping in a Difficult Time

“Who are you all dressed up for?”

“Where are you going today?”

It seems we can never escape the people who ask us these questions when we are “dressed up”. Someone always has to make us feel strange or embarrassed for the simple act of wearing something special, fun, or colorful. But why is it always these two questions – why does dressing up mean we are going somewhere? Why does it mean we are doing it for others? I think these past few months have proven otherwise.

We all started to see the effect that putting together an outfit, wearing a necklace, or doing our hair had on us. We were in a better mood, we got more work done, and at the end of the day when we slipped back into our pajamas they really felt like pajamas – cozy and ready to be slept in. If we look back at our wardrobe choices we notice that we were dressing for a feeling, and that feeling was just for us.

Think of all the times these past months you online shopped and thought, “I have to get this! You never know, I may be able to wear it soon!” We kept justifying our purchases this way but really we were justifying the idea of buying something that only we, or very few people, would see.

We have to get comfortable feeling good for “no reason”. We hear it so often, that we should dress for ourselves and not others but it still feels like a strange idea. However, I think we’ve all had enough practice these past few months and it’s something we shouldn’t forget.

Of course we can’t wait to go out in our new clothes and jewelry, I can’t wait either – but at least we proved, even if just to ourselves, that the reason we shop and get dressed is solely for us.
